"SMARTNER DATABASE EXTENDER ENABLES MOBILE ACCESS TO COMPANY DATABASES"
The Finnish mobile software company Smartner Information Systems Ltd launches a new mobile solution to provide mobile workforce with a convenient way to search and update data in enterprise information systems, using WAP and SMS enabled handsets, PDA devices and a web interface. Smartner Database Extender is targeted for operators and service providers who are offering the solution to their enterprise customers as a mobile service.
The increasing mobility of employees creates a need for using existing enterprise information systems independent of time and location. Smartner Database Extender responds to this need by enabling SMS, WAP, PDA and WWW access to company databases while on the move. "As Database Extender enables the use of company databases at any time and place, the existing information systems will be used more efficiently. There are numerous fields of use: mobilizing internal phone books, customer data, inventory and price information is just a beginning. Any information stored in, for example, Oracle or Microsoft SQL Server databases, or even in Excel sheets is accessible", says Ari Backholm, Vice President of Business Development at Smartner.
Smartner Database Extender is offered as a hosted service by a mobile operator, or a service provider. As the operator takes care of service maintenance and administration, the customer company can concentrate on its core business. The secure and reliable use of contact lists, warehouse levels and other databases is ensured by Smartner Enterprise Gateway that connects the service provider's environment to the company's internal information systems with a highly secure SSL/TLS connection.
Setting up Database Extender as a service is easy and quick for companies, since only a light-weight connector software from a CD-ROM is installed at the enterprise premises. Thus, the service is ideal even for small and medium-sized enterprises. All the other software needed is installed at the operator's environment, including the user and management tools that enable the provision of the service for new companies. The solution can also be integrated seamlessly to the service provider's existing solutions portfolio as well as to Smartner's email and calendar solutions.
