TEKES FUNDS SMARTNER'S PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT
Airis SmartAdapt integrates applications with various types of information systems

Tekes, the National Technology Agengy of Finland, has decided to grant 2 million FIM to Smartner Information Systems Ltd. for further development of the company's product Airis SmartAdapt. Airis SmartAdapt is Smartner's technology solution, which enables integration of applications with different types of databases and other information systems. Key areas of development of Airis SmartAdapt will focus on the development of complementary adapters, with which a greater number of systems can be accessed, and on the creation of new development and management tools. The funding provided by Tekes is comprised of a grant of 1 million FIM, and a capital loan of 1 million FIM.

Airis SmartAdapt is primarily targeted for mobile service providers who wish to improve the adaptability of their solutions to different types of information systems, and create mobile business application portals. "With mobile business solutions, scalability of adapter technology is of crucial importance. We believe that, in the future, a significant part of mobile business solutions will be provided as application services. In increasing the degree of utilization of such services in a company, adaptability of applications to different types of information systems is of crucial importance," says Mika Uusitalo, Chief Technology Officer of Smartner. Smartner's adapter technology makes transfer of data from one system to another, or to a unified reporting system easier, and enables synchronization of data between mobile devices and servers over the network.

Airis SmartAdapt is a component of Smartner's Airis Product Family, which includes an application platform specifically designed to fulfill the needs of service operators. The first version of the platform, the development of which was also financially supported by Tekes, was released in July 2000. "In Tekes we estimate that the Airis mobile application platform developed by Smartner has high changes of becoming a competitive export. SmartAdapt expands the utility of the Airis platform and, by this way, increases the competitiveness of the product," says Katja Ahola, a technology expert of Tekes. "Development of mobile technologies will significantly increase the growth potential of mobile business applications on international markets. These new and rapidly growing markets offer companies seeking growth and internalisation, such as Smartner, excellent development opportunities."

According to Uusitalo, Chief Technology Officer of Smartner, Tekes' financial contribution to product development in Smartner clearly shows that the know-how and innovativeness of the company's product development team have been recognized. "The enthusiasm in our team stems from the possibilities, introduced by the new markets, to create products that are no longer tied to a particular customer's needs. Tekes' financial support enables us to redefine the goals of our product development in a broader context," Uusitalo says.
