SMARTNER'S MOMAIL ENABLES EMPLOYEES TO MANAGE THEIR ENTERPRISE E-MAIL ACCOUNTS THROUGH SMS
Smartner Information Systems Ltd. releases MoMail, a software product that enables
reading, receiving and sending e-mail messages on an existing enterprise e-mail
account with a GSM phone through SMS. After MoMail has been installed on the
company’s own server, employees can access their e-mail accounts with GSM
phones. MoMail is an operator-independent application, and the use of it does
not require setting up a new e-mail account.
Smartner’s MoMail provides an
additional point of access to existing enterprise e-mail accounts. In practice
this means that employees can now manage their e-mails not only from a desktop,
but also with their GSM phones. They can browse the headings of new e-mails as
well as read, reply and forward individual messages at any time and at any
place. Users have full control of all these functions; new e-mails are sent to
the GSM phone only on request, not automatically pushed. By providing a user
interface for managing enterprise e-mail accounts from a mobile terminal,
MoMail helps employees keep up to date with new information.
From the technology point of view, the benefits of MoMail include fast installation and
high-standard data security. Apart from the e-mails received as SMS messages, the e-mails remain
inside the company’s firewall. Identification of users is based on SIM-cards, and sessions as well as
passwords can be used as additional security mechanisms. As a CD-ROM
application, MoMail can be installed on the employees’ desktop computers
rapidly and easily. The company only needs a Windows NT Server, and a Siemens
GSM modem. MoMail supports POP3 and IMAP4 protocols, thus enabling access to
Microsoft Outlook, Lotus Notes and many other e-mail accounts.
For companies with mobile
workforce, MoMail is a cost-efficient and currently the fastest available means
to provide access to enterprise e-mail accounts with a GSM phone. “Wherever you
can send a text message, you can also use MoMail. A user can read his e-mail
messages from China just as easily as from Finland”, says Janne Orava, Product
Manager of Smartner. “GSM phones are much more common and also cheaper to use
than WAP phones and Communicators. Text messages provide a secure and
cost-efficient means of communication.”
MoMail is currently in test use in ten enterprises. Some employees of Finpro in
Helsinki and London, for instance, have for the past month had access to their
e-mail accounts with their GSM phones. The efficiency and user-friendliness of
the application has been a positive surprise, and Finpro recently ordered more
MoMail licenses.
