SMARTNER DELIVERS TO DNA FINLAND AN EMAIL AND CALENDAR WAP SERVICE

A recently established Finnish mobile operator, DNA Finland Ltd., offers its enterprise customers a WAP service that enables users to access their enterprise email accounts and calendars with GSM and GPRS phones. The service, named dna Työpöytä (“dna Desk”), is delivered to DNA Finland by Smartner Information Systems Ltd., a software and professional services company specializing in mobile software solutions targeted for operators. Smartner’s solution is the first operator-hosted mobile service worldwide that connects to enterprise email and calendar systems in both GSM and GPRS networks.

Vast numbers of employees need to access the enterprise mail and calendar servers when they are not in the office. DNA’s mobile service, delivered by Smartner, enables users to access their enterprise email accounts and calendars with a mobile phone. Hosted and administered by the operator, the mobile email and calendar service is a cost-effective and easily available solution for the enterprise customer. In Smartner’s solution a connector featuring an SSL encrypted connection from the enterprise server to the dna Työpöytä service is installed in the enterprise premises from a CD ROM.

The dna Työpöytä service is comprised of Smartner’s enabling mobile portal technology and two wireless applications, Smartner Email Extender and Smartner Calendar Extender. “Thanks to Smartner's existing software components, DNA is able to launch the service within a short period of time. With the help of Smartner’s professional services we will also train our staff and fine-tune the delivery process,” says Joonas Hyyppä, Product Group Manager of DNA Finland Ltd.

Designed for enterprise use, dna Työpöytä enables employees to access their enterprise email accounts and calendars with a WAP browser. The service features all standard email and calendar functions. The calendar functions in real time, as a result of which co-workers can immediately see the changes made to the calendar. While sending emails and invitations to events, it is also possible to browse the address list in order to check the contact information of the attendees. The service can be used with Nokia 6210, Nokia 7110 and Ericsson R320 WAP phones, as well as with the Motorola T260 GPRS phone.

The market for mobile business services is emerging. Research by companies such as Arthur Andersen, Merrill Lynch, and Goldman Sachs in 2000 estimated that the global market for mobile applications will grow to USD 11,6 billion by 2003 - more than 20 times the size of the market today. In a survey conducted by Smartner in November 2000, nearly half of Finnish small and medium-sized enterprises considered that mobile access to email will become necessary for them during the year 2001, and over 80 per cent thought that this will be the case within the next two years.
