SMARTNER EMAIL AND CALENDAR EXTENDERS ENHANCED WITH LOTUS NOTES CONNECTION - Business Users can Access Their Enterprise Emails and Electronic Calendars in Lotus Notes With Mobile Phones in Both GSM and GPRS Networks

Smartner Information Systems Ltd. releases a new feature in Smartner Email Extender and Smartner Calendar Extender. This feature allows mobile access to enterprise emails and electronic calendars to an even greater number of business users. With Smartner’s applications, emails and calendar information on the enterprise’s own Lotus Domino server can be accessed with mobile phones. The applications are part of Smartner’s solution targeted for operators and other service providers who offer mobile services to business users.

Smartner Email Extender 1.0 and Smartner Calendar Extender 1.0 are mobile applications designed for business use. These applications enable users to manage their enterprise emails and electronic calendars with mobile devices. The applications feature all standard email and calendar functions. When sending meeting requests and emails, it is also possible to browse the electronic address book to find the recipients’ contact information.

Smartner Extender applications, incorporating connectivity to the Microsoft Exchange server, were released in January 2001. The applications feature WAP, SMS and WWW user interfaces and they can be used in both GSM and GPRS networks. A high level of security is provided by Smartner Enterprise Gateway, which forms an SSL-secured connection between the enterprise server and the operator-hosted service. Smartner Enterprise Gateway ensures a secure transfer of emails and calendar information in the network.

Smartner’s email and calendar applications are targeted for operators who offer mobile services to enterprise customers. The solution benefits vast numbers of business users and the administration tools incorporated in the applications allow the operator to serve a number of enterprise customers simultaneously. According to a survey conducted by the Helsinki University of Technology in November 2000, 46 per cent of Finnish small and mid-sized enterprises believe that mobile email will be topical for them during the year 2001.

Lawrence Sellin, Mobile E-Business Alliances Executive, EMEA, at IBM, regards the Lotus Notes connection as a significant step in the development of mobile business services: “IBM is looking forward to working with Smartner and leading mobile service providers to enable corporate customers' office systems for mobile access. This is a great extension to our WebSphere based partner solutions for mobile service providers,” says Mr. Sellin.
